My start upon the day's work of collecting was, as usual, delayed by the preparation of breakfast and the washing of dishes. I then rode to the Thomas Ranch in the truck with Mr. Hatfield and saddled the horse which had been selected for me. My traps in and above the creosote association were visited on the way back to our camp, camps. No specimens were secured. After I had returned to camp, I rode the horse out thru the "first bottom" to gather up all my traps in that locality; including the three no. 4 traps set for beaver! In a trap near a water hole, I found a shunk (Mephitis mephitis). I drowned it in the water, after it had discharged some scent, and tied it on the saddle with my traps. I returned to camp with all my traps from the "first bottom" and skinned the shunk. On the morning ride, I saw a red-tailed hawk (Buteo borealis), a road-runner (Geococcyx) and I heard quail of good an undetermined number in quail-brush. After lunch, I loaded 16 traps and some bait upon the horse and rode down the river about 4 miles, to a point below the Thomas Ranch. There I set out the traps along the road.
