Feathers. 1935. Boyes Prairie, Prairie Creek State Park, 40. 240 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. (Cont.) Oct. 23. From the end of the road, I walked south along the newly constructed East Ridge trail 1 mi. to where a CCC crew was working. The foreman told me he had seen a cow elk a short distance south on this ridge some two weeks previously. He said they frequently saw elk tracks in the trail as they walked to work in the morning. In my walk up to the summit of this ridge, I had noticed that from 1200 ft. to the top (1500 ft.), tan oaks and Douglas firs were quite numerous among the hemlocks and redwoods. Rhododendron and Oregon grape were the predominant shrubs. I left the foreman and walked east, down off the main divide ½ mi., into the headwaters of Ah Pah Creek. On my way back up, I first heard and then saw two cow elk. They had jumped, in alarm, and then run probably 50 yards, before stopping to look at me. After having identified them, I moved forward. They became startled, and ran off downhill, making considerable noise. During this walk down into the Klamath watershed, I had seen considerable sign of elk having been in that area recently.
