Feathers. 1935. Boyes Prairie Prairie Creek State Park, 240 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. 39. (cont.) Oct. 22, 1935. camp at 4 o.m. I heard reports of elk having been seen near where the CCC men have been dumping logs, in a canyon west of the highway, about 1 mi. S. of the Del Norte Co. line. I drove up there and inspected the nearby vicinity, but saw no fresh sign. I then returned to camp. During my absence Mrs. Feathers had captured a brush rabbit, which had run into the house, while fleeing from a dog. Birds and mammals identified during the day were: 2 fox sparrows, 3 ravens, 15 chickarees, 3 winter wrens, 5 varied thrush, 5 chickadees, 1 pileated woodpecker. Weather - clear. Oct. 23, 1935. With Mrs. Feathers, I drove north on the Redwood highway to a point 1 mi. S Del Norte Co. line. Here we turned east on the East Ridge road and drove south 2 mi. At this place I left the car, which Mrs. F. drove back to camp. I then walked south, making occasional circuitous walks off on each side of the road. I continued on in this manner to the end of the road, about 2 miles. No signs of elk were seen during this time.
