Feathers. 1935. Boyes Prairie, Prairie Creek State Park, 240th, Humboldt Co., Calif. 34. Oct. 26, 1935. I drove south to Mr. Konrad's ranch, who had offered to take a walk toward the ocean with me. While waiting for him, I asked Mr. Orr, who was stopping at an auto camp across the road, if he would care to join us. Orr was interested so we three left Konrad's ranch and started climbing the open hill to the west. We walked over open hillside to a point 1/2 mi. west of Konrad's ranch house. Portions of this hillside land were overgrown with bunch grass, bracken, huckleberry, salal, ceanothus, Thimble berry and alder. A few manganita bushes and one madroña were seen. Perhaps 50% of this hillside land is covered with brush. The remainder is grassland. Sheep are pastured throughout the year on Konrad's 180 a. ranch, and on Wl elvin's land, 120 a., west of and adjoining that of Konrad. The sheep remain on the grassland almost exclusively, seldom entering or feeding on any of the forms of brush. Of the elk which we were told formerly ranged and grazed on this hillside, we saw no recent sign. There is sufficient evidence to indicate that these elk graze considerably whenever opportunity and conditions permit. I am convinced that the presence of sheep on the
