Feathers. 1935. Boyes Prairie Prairie Creek State Park, 248th, Humboldt Co., Calif. 29. (cont.) Oct. 18, 1935. In the early afternoon, I learned from the CCC camp clerk that an elk carcass had been found by Mr. Elmer Gastman, one of the CCC foremen. I approached him (Gastman) as he was leaving for his afternoon's work and requested him to direct me to the location of the carcass. He offered to accompany me personally, so we both went in my car. We drove north 4 mi. on the Redwood highway to where a new park trail led west from the highway to the summit of the ridge west of and paralleling Prairie Creek. Mr. Gastman and I walked west on this trail 1/2 mi. to the ridge summit, there coming to the end of the trail. From the trails' end, we walked north along the main ridge for another 1/2 mi. to where Mr. Gastman had hidden the antlers which he had previously removed from the carcass. I looked at the skull and saw that it was in very good condition. We then went north a few hundred yards to where the rest of the carcass lay.
