Feathers 1935. Boyes Prairie, Prairie Creek State Park, 240ft., 23. Humboldt Co., Calif. Oct. 11, 1935. Russell and I drove south on the highway to Mr. Mathias Konrad's ranch, which is also the location of the Co-op Meat Co., situated ½ mi. north of Orick on the Redwood highway. Our object was to secure some skeletal material and to study the elk situation near there. We arrived there shortly before 7:00 A.M. Mr. Konrad was not ready to go out with us immediately so we took some notes while waiting for him. Before we started out, Mr. Konrad told us that 15 years ago, when elk were destroying his hay crop, he called in the game warden from Crescent City. The warden inspected the damaged hay field and told Konrad not to harm the elk, that the Fish and Game Commission would reimburse him for his financial loss. Konrad said that the elk destroyed the bulk of his hay crop, and that the bill he submitted to F. and G. was returned with the statement that they could not pay for damage done by wild animals, and that the warden had no authorization to make him such a promise. Konrad said that later he used all the means at his command to keep the elk from ruining his crops; such as: shooting them with a shotgun, shooting near them with a rifle, building and rebuilding fences and setting dogs after the elk.
