In the timbered sections were: Douglas fir, maple, vine maple, tan oak, yew and madroña. We drove on to a ranch where we spoke with a Mrs. Tomlinson. This was 1 mi. farther east on the road. She told us her children had seen two elk at a watering trough on the road 10 mi. from Orick, at night, and had driven them up the road with their automobile. She said the local stage driver had seen them there frequently, previous to the discontinuance of the stage service one year ago. She had been there 25 years and had never seen an elk. We drove back west on the road to Mr. Ogles ranch a few hundred yards from the junction of the Orleans road with the Redwood highway. Mrs. Ogles said she had seen two elk on the hillside just west of the highway, and within sight of her ranch house, sometime early in the summer of this year. The statements of all three people seemed to coincide in a general way and had evidence of veracity. We drove back to camp. Birds and mammals identified during the day were: junco-s, raven-s, meadow-lark-s, valley quail-s, varied thrush-s, chipmunk-s, chickaree-s grey squirrel-3.
