Feathers. 1935. Boyes Prairie, Prairie Creek State Park, 240 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif. Oct. 10, 1935- Russell and I decided to visit the region known as the Bald Hills, some 12 mi. E of Orick, to ascertain whether there were elk in that vicinity. We had been told, on several occasions, that elk had been seen there. We went first to an Indian's shack about 4 mi. north of here on the Redwood Highway to see if an elk skull we had seen there could be purchased. We did not find the Indian at home, so drove south to Orick. The postmaster at Orick, Mr. Webster, told us he had seen one elk one mile south of Orick 5 years ago. He thought there had been an increase in the numbers of elk from 20 years ago until 1931. At this time he said he was reasonably certain that quite a number had been killed by illegal shooting. Previous to 4 years ago complaints by farmers about the elk were common, he said. Recently there has been little mention of elk depredation, except from Mr. Davison, he stated. Mr. Webster said that a Mr. Konrad had asked for assistance from the county Sheriff and the Fish and Game Commission in regard to elk destroying crops. The Fish and Game Commission had not responded and Webster thought Konrad had shot several of them.
