He did say he had employed a man for two weeks or more to cultivate the carrots. We saw over thirty valley quail feeding near the ranch house with the chickens. He said that he never permits them to be shot on his ranch. Mr. Davison told us that he arrived in Humboldt Co. 55 years ago and worked on the coast at Gold Bluff for some time. He said he had killed elk over there. Having come to the ranch where he now resides some 45 years ago, he stated that from that time until 10 years ago he had seen no elk on his ranch. He saw the first elk on his ranch 10 years ago he said. From that time until the present, he said the elk seen on and around the ranch had increased steadily in numbers. Mr. Davison's statements should, in my opinion, be given full credit for veracity. He stated that he has known elk to jump over a six foot fence. They had also broken parts of his fences a great many times, he said. He told us of two cow elk with calves, that resisted all the efforts of his two dogs to drive them from his field. He said this occurred in June and that the calves had just been born. We drove home to camp, arriving there at 6:00 P.M.
