Feathers 1935. Boys Prairie, Prairie Creek State Park, 240 ft., 15. Humboldt Co., Calif. Oct. 9, 1935- Russell and I left camp at [illegible] A.M. and started north on the Ridge trail. At 7:45 A.M. about 2 mi. north of camp Russell and I heard and saw a cow elk. She evidently became aware of our presence by scenting us. We were very quiet at the time but the wind was blowing in her direction. There was a heavy fog, making the visibility poor. The elk came walking toward us along the trail, looking for us and sniffing the air. When within twenty yards of us, she saw us and stopped. Within thirty seconds she became alarmed, whirled about and trotted off to the left of the trail in the direction whence she had come. During all her movements, from when she was about fifty yards from us until she came to within 20 yards, we were able to see her only occasionally, due to the extreme density of the timber. The timber was almost solely redwood. We walked on and passed the end of the trail about 1/2 mi. west of the Swimming Hole. Five I.C.C. boys were there at work on extending the trail to the north. About 1 mi. farther north along the ridge we turned off the summit to the east and ate lunch. We then went down thru the heavy brush and fallen timber to the Prairie Creek trail.
