Feathers Boys Prairie, Prairie Creek State Park, 2404.14. 1934. Humboldt Co., Calif. Oct. 8, 1935- I heard a crash in the forest and Russell and I saw a cow elk come into view. She slipped off thru the woods very quietly and we were unable to see her again. I picked up a deer horn in a canyon 1/2 mi. Southwest of here. Elk sign was very plentiful in this canyon, which opened out into a nice flat, sparsely timbered with redwood and spruce. As we were investigating this area I heard geese honking and soon saw a flock of about 25 flying south over the forest. In this flat I found the horns and part of the skeleton of a bull elk. We later found parts of another skeleton. Five fresh elk beds were found here within an area of one acre. Elk sign was very common here. Broken bushes and uprooted sword ferns, elk trails, droppings and tracks showed this place to be frequented by a considerable number of elk. We estimated we were 1/2 mi from the ocean. As we returned northeast on the Squashan Creek trail, we "jumped" and saw two cow elk near the trail. They were quite wild, and soon disappeared from sight. We returned to camp back along the Upper Gold Bluff trail. Nothing of unusual interest was noted during the walk back. Distance covered 10 mi.
