White wing feathers show in folded wings(pair) over rear 1/3 of body, as on W-wing scoter. Dark eye. Larger than coots it was with, rides with neck up, like coot and some grebes and guillemots. Bill blue-black, broad in view from front, trim from back, short and slender in side view like guillemot. No swollen forehead or base of bill as in scoters. Overall profile of guillemot, but patch much further rear, and much smaller, narrower. It dove capably and stayed down a long time. Viewed with 8.4x binocs and with 15-45x bushness schpe.
