We spent half-hour over south and west sides of 2 ponds, and relocated it in open water area S of Green End road. In close company with Fimm C. Merganser, just staying in one small area in mid-pond. Did beat wings, turn slowly around so all sides, rear and head-on views were plain thru the scope(15x-45X) (green end road & Miantimoni St.) Watched it for half hour as it swam across pond, to east, diving only occasionally until reading east side near brugh, and then started diving actively 1-3 or more times per minute, afterwards, swimming and diving rapidly as it crossed to w side of pond, and there was diving with a dozen common mergansers, mostly drakes. Was an adult male, with black bill and black area at front of head that made the whole front black. Side marks very thin. Black back between winds showed little. Crest outline not distinctive. Was in from open water 8-10 feet. I went out on ice to flush it, and it flew less than 50 yards to land again. The rows of black spottings on the wings were almost absent, and were smaller than illustrations on the trailing edge feather tips, too. Black bill and black area on fauve gave the front half of head a black look, like the Smew at Newport. Feb. 11, 1976, Ipswich to Rockport and around Cape Ann, Essex Co. Mass. 4-530p.m. Windy.
