August 31, 1975, Ocean Trip on Katy-D, 0630-1720 EDST, 110° course to 58 mi ESE of Oregon Inlet, Dare County, North Carolina. To 35°32' by 74°43'. Then north for 6-8 miles, and WNW to Oregon Inlet. Birds of Oregon Inlet area and Pamlico Sound, going and coming, a.m. andp.m. Brown Pelicans - 10-12 Greater Yellowlegs Laughing Gulls Black Tern Snowy Egrets Lesser Yellowlegs Royal Terns Black Skimmers - 15-20 Black Ducks Black-backed Gull Common Terns Starlings. Whimbrel - 3 Herring Bulls Least Terns On course in Atlantic Ocean: ***Cory's Shearwater - Puffinus diomedeia - first at 20 miles, then 4, then 38 at 36 miles, 34 at 40 miles, plus other flocks on the water this relatively calm morning. 300& total. Audubon Shearwater * Puffinis lherminieri - good looks at these, since only 1 ever seen before. 1st at 33 miles, total of 15 all day. Very dark upper head, neck, back, mantle and tail, and undertail dark. Rest whitish below. Much smaller than Cory's and seemed to have more direct, stronger flight, and beating less frequently, but same speeds. 5 seen at mile 42. Wilson Petrel - 5 at mile 20 and more thru day for total over 100. Harcourt Petrel - 1 at mile 46, with 2 or 3 Wilsons. Laughing Gulls all day Royal Terns - few Parasitic Jaeger - at mile 46, chasing pair of Bridged Terns, and chased by them. It did take down one tern into the water, but the tern flew off. Pomarine Jaeger - 1 with strong breast band at mile 35. Bridged Terns - 2 at mile 40, total 56. seemed different calls adults, young. Black Tern - imm. plumage at mile 40. Shorebirds - 12 whitish, unidentified. Many yellow sulphur butterflies. Red Phalarope - 1 with 2 Northerns. Flying fish Northern Phalaropes - 18 in all. 1 huge turtle Barn Swallow 6 porpoisse. Prairie Warbler August 31, 1975, Pea Island, NWR, Dare Co. N.C. 1800-1900EDST. Brkn, breeze from W. DC Cormorants Osprey Royal Tern Blue Heron Willetts Common Tern Reddish Egret Lesser Yellowlegs Black Tern Common Egret Long-bill Dowitcher Black Skimmer - 12's Snowy Egret Stilt Sandpiper Fish Crows Cattle Egret - 3 Wilson Snipe Brown Thrasher Common Bittern - 1 Sanderlings Catbird White Ibis - 2 Least Sandpiper Yellowthroat Louisiana Heron Avocets - 50& Redwings Canada Geese - pinioned?
