June 10-12, 1975 - St. Paul Island, continued: Common Snipe Wandering Tattler, 1 on 6/11, 6/12 Greater Yellowlegs - 2, 6/11 Rock Sandpiper - at least 6 pairs, distract you with calls, chips, and V'd wings ** Baird Sandpiper - Erolia bairdii - full breeding plumage, slightly smaller than N. Phalarope it was with on small lake mudflat, 6/12. near Polovina Hill. Bill 1", black, fairly straight. Legs black or very dark. Crown rich or bright rusty or chestnut of a lighter shade than yesterday's Rufous-necked Sp. White eye-line plain. Rufousish back with much pattern scales on wings and back. Tail with slight white area on side near body, not like longspur, and chest and throat uniform gray grown with sharp line across below like a Pectoral. Lightly streaked vertically. ** Rufous-necked Sandpiper - Erolia ruficollis - at small snow-melt pond on Cone Hill western side of island, 6/11. Flushed and went north toward Lincoln Bight. Red Phalaropes in full plumage quite a sight. 4 and 3 seen at most one time. Northern Phalarope - 6 on 6/10, 1 on 6/11, 7 on Polovina Lake, each on own puddle, spinning. 1 nest at Weatherstation Lake with 3 eggs. Parasitic Jaeger - brilliant plumaged with 2-3" dark breast band chasing Kittiwakes and Slaty-backed Gulls at Weatherstation lake, 6/12. K's flew away with "pained" call after hit. PJ tried flock of flying K's, which scattered. Glaucous Gull 6/10 Long-tailed Geogel, too Glaucous-winged Gull aommon ** Slaty-backed Gull - Larus schistisagus - three of these on Weatherstation Lake with 15 Black-legged and 2 Red-legged Kittiwakes. All were dipping wings and heads and "preening", with the three at the rear edge of the flock as it worked slowly for- ward. Three showed particularly well as they flushed to move ahead a bit, but always staying a bit aloof from K's. Mantle about shade of Western Gull,s but not black as Greater. Wings stuck further back that K's and the wing breadth was distinctive. Wide white trailing edge to wing. Reddish legs. 6/12/75 ** Red-legged Kittiwakes rare - Rissa brevirostris - Lifer Black-legged Kittiwakes common to abundant Black-headed Gull 6/11 near village Common Murre - plain and ringed eye forms ** Thick-billed Murre - Uria lomvia - NA Lister. ** Parakeet Auklet - Cyclorrhynchus psittacula - very common at seacliffs and open water. ** Crested Auklet - Aethia cristatella - Uncommon on St. Paul, compared to others. ** Least Auklet - Aethia pusilla - very common, individually and flocks everywhere. Noisy. Nest on cliffs and in jumbled piles of rocks along the coast. Horned Puffin - 2, 6/11, maybe 12 prs altogether. Tufted Puffin - 5 on 6/11, 10-15, 20-25 other days Snowy Owl - each of two trips to Webster Lake in NE corner of St. Paul. Bank Swallow - 2 on 6/11, S of Ridge Hill, 3 by 6/11 eve at hotel. Water Pipits Gray-crowned Rosy Finch - seem to have become the starling and house sparrow of St. Paul. Everywhere in hilly and sea cliff areas and on and in human habitation. Nests checked on shelves in bldgs held 5 eggs, 4 (later 5) eggs, 5, 5, 5 and 4 eggs. Lapland Longspur - 12's singing and floating downward. Some calls like a light W. Meadowlark. Reminds me of skylark in habits.
