Arizona. w/ Murray Hansen. Met John Gottschalk, Doug and Natalie Danforth, Jerry Pratt. 7-1020?am. Turkey Vultures Turkey - in road, crouched on pavement as we surprised it in the car. It stayed right in open, permitting us to takepicture from window, with car engine running, and it hissed, growled, and gurgled at us the whole time. I got out, went around to "free it", bent to pick it up and it jumped up, ran away, circled back across the road and into the woods 30 or 40 feet before doing the same squat escape action! Band-tailed Pigeons - 3 Black-chinned, Broad-tailed and Broad-billed Hummers. Coppery-tailed Trogon - Trogon elegans - LIFER - calling at bottom of Garden Canyon, just a few minutes after we arrived, just 1/10 to 2/10 mi above picnic area. Male in beautiful plumage. No eye ring apparent. Yellow bill. Much blue gray shows on flakks from back. 9-10 syllable calls. White tail edge from back. Female in cottonwood below Sawmill Camp. 4/10 mile. Deep wagging of tail, with under rump pink showing from the back. Dull brown body. F w/ yellow bill. Poor eye-ring and faint under tail. Male moved high up canyon wall. The latter pair seen about 945 a.m. 3 seen in all. Arizona Woodpecker Cassin Kingbird - many pairs Western Kingbird - few pairs Buff-breasted Flycatcher - Empidonax fulvifrons - LIFER - Unique calls. Pair in pure tall yellow pine. Distinctive rich rufous buff color. Always close to tree trunk on branch or stub, sidewise to surface of trunk, with tail quivering as they alight. Sometimes 2 birds at one point. Light, 2-syllable note. Learned in Bent's LH's many nests are placed on top of stub or limb against the trunk. Hammond/Dusky Flycatcher - 2& syllable call - light. Yellowish side to head.Wh&gray below. Western Wood Pewees Western Tanager - 12's Coue's Flycatchers - severa. Hepatic Tanager - 2 pr Olivaceous Flycatchers Summer Tanager - 1 Stellar Jay - 4 Black-head Grosbeak common Mexican Jays - 10-12 Lesser Goldfinches White-breasted Nuthatch Ruf-sided Towhees Brown Creeper - 2 Bewick Wren - 2 Canyon Wren - Rock Wren Robins Eastern Bluebird - 1M Hutton Vireo - several Solitary Vireo - sev. some chasing each other with unusual scold note unknown to us.
