Red-tailed Hawk - 1 immature Sooty Grouse - 3 - no full-plumaged males. Habitat of alder thickets openish underneath. AS I approached they lay in open corn-lily meadow close to boulders 8" or more in height. Difficult to see then. Watched them feeding on tall grass heads. They had moved less than 100 yards in course of about 3 hours during mid-day. Belted Kingfisher Red-shafted Flicker Downy Woodpecker Hairy Woodpecker Modoc Sapsucker Williamson Sapsucker White-headed Woodpecker Olive-sided Flycatcher - 1 Stellar Jay - 3 Mountain Chickadee - small flocks Red-breasted Nuthatch feeding on open grassy area. Brown Creeper Robins - 2 ad and h 3/4-grown young. Russet-backed Thrush - 1 CalaverasWarbler - 1st calling 9/10 a.m. Audubon Warbler - 2 Yellow Warbler - 1 Cassin Finch - 6 Oregon Junco - 15-20 Lincoln Sparrow - 3 Sept. 10, 1961, Lassen Peak Trail and Peak - 11a.m.-3 p.m.,PDST.:Shasta Co. Calif. Cooper Hawk - along trail at 9,800 feet. Sparrow Hawk - 1 at 9300 on trail, and 2 over peak at10,470 feet. Black Swift - 6 of them skimmed swiftly over top of peak at 1:30 p.m., heading dde southly. Clarke Nutcracker - 6 or 8 along trail up, and 10 or 12 on and about peak and in the crater areas of the peak. Pipits - 30-40, individually and in small flocks on rocks within craters of peak, and at edge of water and snow fields too. 5 seen along trail up. Oregon Juncos - 2 on trail up. 15 or so within crater peak area. All showed chestnut. Sept. 23, 1961, Hope Valley and W. Carson R., Alpine Co. Calif. 10:30-12:30PDST and 4-5 p.m.FDST. Red-tailed Hawk - 1 ad and 2 imm. Red-shafted Flickers Yellow-belliedSapsucker - 2 Williamson Sapsucker F Stellar Jays - few Clarke Nutcracker- 1 Mountain Chickadees Dipper - 2 seen. 1 was not teetering, but sitting quietly on rock attempting to cough up a caddis-fly case, which it eventually did. Eyelid blinked during process. Permitted me to approach at full height to within 15 feet of it. Robins - several Mountain.Bluebirds - many on valley floor. Townsend Solitaire - 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglets - several Orange-crowned Warbler - 1 in willow thicket.
