European Widgeon - Mareca penelope - new life-lister ! Saw three of them today,
in with the many flocks of baldpates on the open waters of the refuge.
The first I have seen in the open. The orange-tinged crown and brownish
wash to the head were distinctive. There may have been others on the
refuge, but it would be purely accidental if they were seen. These 3 I
saw were all withing a 50-foot radius of each other.

Sandhill Cranes - a fairly compact flock of 36 individuals were observed feeding
on dry ground in the center of the refuge, just about 150 yards from the car.
We drove within 75 yards of them, and then they took flight when John Sypulski
tried to get even closer for a graphlex picture of them. They took flight, and
gage their rolling call note as they did so. They were slow, but powerful
fliers, and circled nearly back once, before heading off toward the west end of
the refuge. Two separated and headed southeast, not joing the main flock again
