November 22, 1949, Gray Lodge State Refuge, SW Butte Co. Calif. 1200-1530 PST. Clear, calm, and warm. Eared Grebe - 4 Pied-billed Grebe - 45 Farallon Cormorants - 8 White Pelicans - 20 Blue Heron - 50 American Egret - 50 Snowy Egrets - 25 Black-crowned Night Herons - 13-1400 Least Bittern - 3 Bittern - 1 Less-r Canada Goose - 300 Cackling Canada Goose - 1200 White-fronted Goose - 2500 Ross Goose - 135-150 Lesser Snow Goose - 7500 Mallards - 200,000 Gadwalls - 200 Baldpates - 150,000 European Widgeon - Mareca penelope - new life-lister ! Saw three of them today, in with the many flocks of baldpates on the open waters of the refuge. The first I have seen in the open. The orange-tinged crown and brownish wash to the head were distinctive. There may have been others on the refuge, but it would be purely accidental if they were seen. These 3 I saw were all withing a 50-foot radius of each other. Pintail - 250,000 Green-winged Teal - 2500 Cinnamon Teal - 300 Shoveller - 2000 Wood Duck - 15 Bufflehead - 5 Ruddy Duck - 12 Vulture - 35 Sharp-shinned Hawk - 1 Red-tailed Hawk - 18 Red-beillied Hawk - 3 Marsh Hawk - 12 Sparrow Hawk - 8 Pheasants Sandhill Cranes - a fairly compact flock of 36 individuals were observed feeding on dry ground in the center of the refuge, just about 150 yards from the car. We drove within 75 yards of them, and then they took flight when John Sypulski tried to get even closer for a graphlex picture of them. They took flight, and gage their rolling call note as they did so. They were slow, but powerful fliers, and circled nearly back once, before heading off toward the west end of the refuge. Two separated and headed southeast, not joing the main flock again Virginia Rail - just one Coots - 100's and 100's Killdeer Yellow-legs - about 25 seen in two small flocks Western Sandpipers Mourning Doves Monterey Red-shafted Flicker Black Phoebes here and there Ruddy Horned Lark Suisun Long-billed Marsh Wren Pipits California Shrikes - 12 Western Meadowlarks California Bicolor Redwings - 100,000 Brewer Blackbirds Green-backed Goldfinches Common Goldfinches Purple Finches House Finches Golden-crowned Sparrows Gambel's White-crowned Sparrows Modesto Song Sparrows 1375
