Blue Heron - up to 50 seen in one field with American Egrets, which numbers about 200. 150 seen in another field. These fields were cultivated. Bittern - observed 2 at open edge of ditch, south of Butte City. Froze, but turned head as I worked around them. Vulture - About 45 circling in column of smoke from burning bulrush. W. Red-tailed Hawk perched in dead tree with 250& tricolor redwings. Marsh Hawk - about 2/road mile. Prairie Falcon - flew over redwings in above tree, and they all flushed Sparrow Hawk - about 3/mile of road. Pheasants - several, and dozens and dozens flushed along cattail and bulrush ditches through rice areas. Coots - common in some ditches Mourning Doves - small flocks or individuals perches on fences or flushed from roads at intervals. Yellow-billed Magpies - very few, not much tree growth in a rea. Western Crows California Shrike W. Meadowlarks very common in dry-farmed areas, but few in irrigated Tricolored Red-wings - about 250 perched in dead tree areas. with a red-tailed hawk, but they flushed when a prairie falcom. flew over. Observed one flock of 7-8,000 dipping and wheeling almost in unison over open country, landing in willow thickets and on the ground, nearby. Common Goldfinches and Green-backed goldfinches in large and small mixed flowks.
