December 11, 1955, Live Oak-Pennington, SW Butte Co. Calif. 9:15-9:35 a.m. Common Egret - 25-30 in 1 field, Blue Heron - 2 seen. Red-tailed Hawk - several Marsh Hawk - 3 Sparrow Hawk - 15-20 seen, respond to horn Kingfisher - on wire line over big ditch Red-shafted Flicker - many Calif. Woodpecker - several in oaks Crow - 21 Starling - 1 on wire with meadowlark Meadowlarks Redwings Brewer Blackbirds House Finches - flocks up to 250 Common Goldfinches Lesser Goldfinches White-crowned Sparrows Junco - 2 Dec. 11, 1955, Gray Lodge Refuge, SW Butte Co. Calif. Foggy to clear, calm, cool. 10-2 p.m. Pied-billed Grebe - several in 1 portion of refuge only. Blue Heron - 2 or 3 Common Egret - 5 or 6 Black-crowned Night Heron - 3-500 roosting in Scirpus-cattail area. C. Bittern - 1 seen. Whistling Swan - 2 ad and 2 young birds Common Canada Goose - 100's Lesser Canada Goose - 100's Cackling Canada Goose - 1000's Lesser Snow Goose - 1000's Ross Goose - 100's including one vat-dyed yellow-orange (1 of 55 at Tule Lake Calif.). White-fronted Goose - 1000's Mallards - 100,000's - many in tall vegetation Baldpate - 10,000's - more in open water Gadwall - 100's Fintail - 100,000's - more in open water Green-winged Teal - 100's Cinnamon Teal - 1 pair seen Shoveller - 1,000's - few full adult males. Ruddy Duck - all in winter plumage - 25-30 seen. Vulture - 1 or 2 Red-tailed Hawk - 8-10 seen. Marsh Hawk - 5 or 6 over area. Sparrow Hawk - 3 or 4 Coot - 1,000's in area and on shooting area. Wilson Snipe - 1 flushed Killdeer - many Long-billed Curlew - 15-20 in dry vegetated flat. Long-billed Dowitcher - 200-250 Yellow-legs - Greater - 10-15 seen; Western Sandpipers - 12's Avocet - 2 in full winter plumage. Calif. Gull - 1 Red-shafted Flicker - common Black Phoebe - 2 Marsh Wren - many heard singing Mockingbird - 1 at hqs. Pipits Shrike Yellow-headed Blackbirds Bicolor Redwings Northwestern Redwings Brewer Blackbirds Golden-crowned Sparrows - 12's Song Sparrows Dec. 11-1955 - Around West side of Butted 2-2:30 p.m. Vultures - up to 27 at one time. Sparrow Hawks common C. Gull Calif. Shrike - Meadowlarks - Brewer Blkbd. Lark Sparrows - 12's Cackling and Snow and Ross Geese - 1000's on one club area.
