October 16, 1955, SE Farallon Island Group, 10a.m.-1230 noon. Ovc. foggy, cool. Pacific Loon - 6 or 8 in winter plumage about islands area. Sooty Shearwater - 1 near islands at 215 p.m. Double Crested Cormorant - few on islands. Brandt's Cormorants - 1000's - Birds - some 100 or so. Brown Pelican - mostly perched atop high points of islands rocks. Surf Scoters - about island White-winged Scoters - about islands Muddy Duck - 1F or imm. Duck Hawk - 1 full-plumaged adult on southern-most island. Black Turnstones about wave-washed rocks of island. Red-phalaropes - some about Northern phalaropes - some about. Heerman's Gull - few. Herring Gull - some. Western Gull - most common. Calif. Murre - some. Cassin Auklet - some., most perched on water, and would make poor runs to escape before diving. October 16, 1955, Farallon Islands - SE to North group and return. 12:30 noon - 2:15 p.m. Stormy and very choppy sea, and foggy, too. Eared Grebe - 1 near North group. Cormorants - mostly Brandts - up to 1500 or so in one fishing concentration 3 mi. N of SE islands. Brown Pelicans - not over a dozen in area. two followed boat for a bit. Black-footed Albatross - within 2 1/2 miles of North group came into large numbers of shearwaters, murres, auklets, etc. and almost out of thin-air one appeared behind boat, and then there were two, and so on until 5 were present. Took pics. Some on water. Slender-billed Shearwaters - about a dozen seen. Sooty Shearwaters - up to 50 or 75 in loose groups. Others singles. Pink-footed Shearwaters - about 15 seen. Gray-backed on New Zealand Shearwaters - about 25 or 30 seen. Fulmar - several seen sitting on water ahead of boat and flushing as we approached. Black Petrel - 3 or 4 seen Ashy Petrel - 2 or 3 seen Red Phalarope - dozens Northern Phalarope - dozens Sabine Gull - 20 or more immatures or winter plumage in group 3 mi. S of North group. Calif. Murre - very common in the area. Cassin Auklet - very common in the area. Rhinoceros Auklet - 2 dozen or so seen. Tufted Puffin - 1 in winter plumage seen. Audubon Warbler landed on boat while we were observing the albatross. RM
