October 15, 1955, Bay Shore Drive, Richmond-Albany, Calif. 10-11a.m. Red-billed Grebe Pintails common tho hunters present Godwits - some Forester Tern Red-billed Grebe Coots - many W. Sandpipers Common Tern 238 Brown Pelican Willets - dozens G. Gulls October 16, 1955, Golden-Gate Bridge, S.F. to Farallon Islands, 25 mi. Off-shore. 6:50-10a.m.; 2:15- Windy, overcast, and foggy, entire day. Very choppy sea most of time. 5:30 PST Arctic Loon - few (3 or 4) nearer Islands. Black-footed Albatross - 1 at 3:15 p.m. on return. Almar - 1st one seen was over 1/2-way out and was very dark form. Others seen during day were not so dark, and one or two very light. Saw as many as 4 indiv. in 1/2 hour resting on water. Chunky build, and short bill with tube pegged them. Flew like shearwaters, but with more wing-beats, and with parrot-like head. Pink-footed Shearwater - White below, dark back and wingtops, largest form seen. Most near islands, and seen only in a.m. New Zealand or Gray-backed Shearwater - seen over 1/2-way out. White below, large, and with light back set off by black cap and very dark tail. Design of zig-zag or "W" on top of wing-length visible at considerable distance with naked eye. Zippy flight. Individuals seen most of trip till mile or so W of lightship. Sooty Shearwater - very common - 1/2st seen mile or so past lightship going out, and then on to near islands, but not about them. More seen on stormier sea on return in p.m. Slender-billed Shearwater - a very few seen near the Sooties. Slimmer and shorter build and with dark underwings. May have picture of at least one of them. Fork-tailed Petrel - one seen on way out. Black Petrel - None seen on way out, but 2 on way back in p.m. Steady, measured flight. large. Ashy Petrel - 2 mi. east of SE Islands on way out. Solitary. Jerky, shore-bird-like flight. Small Brown Pelican - few near Golden Gate in a.m. Many on return in p.m. Some diving for fish. Even followed boat at times. Double-crested Cormorant - very few seen this trip. Brandt Cormorant - Flying out and in Golden Gate in a.m., and to Marin shore in p.m. Common. Common Egret - outside Golden Gate along Marin shore in a.m. Pintails - some small flocks overhead west of Golden Gate in a.m. Scaup - probably lesser - just 1 on way out. White-winged Scoters - in bay, thru and outside gate a.m. and p.m. Surf Scoter - most common typpe scattered everywhere. Black Turnstone - near island in a.m. Red-phalarope - very few seen ina.m. Many inp.m. Northern Phalarope - not as common as red - most seen inp.m. Heerman's Gull - commonly following ship to lightship, less after thatin a.m. Few inp.m. Herring Gull - not many- mostly in a.m. on way out from Gate. Western Gull - commonest form with ship almost constantly. Drop some pick up others. Most imms. Bonaparte Gull - few seen. Tern - probably Arctic without black tipped red on bill - 2 seen in a.m. Calif. Murre - very few seen till at least half-way to islands. All fall plumage. Cassin Auklet - 2 or 3 within mile or two of islands. Farther toward shore in p.m. Rhinoceros Auklet - 6 or 8 several miles east of islands. Vaux Swift - within 1 mi of SE island in a.m. Pipit - Not far from lightship this form went back and forth over boat, A.M. Brewer Blackbirds - 2 over boat in southerly direction- A.M.
