August 22, 1954, Sacramento By-pass, Yolo co.Calif. 6:45-8 a.m.PDST. calm, clear. Pie-billed Grebe Blue Heron - 2 together in rice field. Egret - 1 Crowned Night Heron - 6-immatures. Green Heron - lad. and 1 imm. Mallards - 6 White-tailed Kite - 1 imm. Sparrow Hawk - 6 Pheasants - no adults, 3 F ad, and 9 imm. Coot - 2 Killdeer - 35-40, most flying and calling. Mourning Dove - 3, 1 yng. Horned Owl - 1 ad. in cottonwood at 50', 8 ft. out from trunk. Anna Hummingbird - 1 ad. Red-shafted Flicker - 40-50, mostly loosely paired. Nuttall Woodpeckers - 15-20, noisy Black Phoebe - several Wood Pewee- 2 Cliff Swallow - 1 Scrub Jay - few Crows Yellow-billed Magpie - 1 Plain Titmouse - 6 Bush-tits - 30-35 Wren-tits - 2 House Wren - 5 Bewick Wren - 3 Calif. Shrike - chasing spotted towhee, brown towhee, flicker, magpie, etc. Warbling Vireo - 3 Orange-crowned Warblers - couple in each tree- 75-100 altold. Pileolated Warblers - 7 McGillvary's Warbler - 3 Meadowlarks - dozens Yellow-headed Blackbird - 1 Bicolor Redwings - 25 Brewer Blackbird - 50 Bullock Oriole- 2 imm. or F.
