June 27, 1954, Pope Beach, Lake Tahoe, Eldorado Co. Calif. 4-6 p.m. PDST. Pied-billed Grebe - 1 White Pelicans - 3 Bittern - 2 or 3 pumping regularly. Canada Goose - much sign around, and old nests found. Mallard - 2 pair seen. Found nest without adult near at 4 p.m. but hen on at 6 p.m. Nest about 10-12" dia. on ground closely surrounded by 3 young lodgepole pines. 2 eggs and 10 young in nest. First found on May 30 by Argantes. Osprey - pair circling and fishing over marsh. Watched one carry 10-11" fish down the beach to nest we had previously located in dead Jeffrey Pine snag about 25' high. Never saw bird actually go to nest, tho it landed on limb near nest. Mountain Chickadees had nest at 10' height in same snag, on side away from lake shore. We found several catfish and hardheads or otherminnows all dry, and mostly headless, lying on the ground below the nest. Sparrow Hawk - 2 Killdeer Willet - Celeste Kirscher and Argantes found a willet sitting on a nest on May 30. The bird did not leave the nest while they stroked it. We found a pair of willets on the lakeshore all p.m., and found the abandoned nest. Located in slight de- pression between 3 closely-spaced cow-pies. There were 2 eggs, and apparently that was all laid, for each had distinct depression under them, probably from pressure of adult bird. Took pic. Two eggs of distinct difference in size. Larger about 2 1/2" long and smaller 2 1/8" long, and each being proportionately different in girth. The larger egg was paler in color as well. Spotted Sandpipers - 4 seen. Calif. Gulls - 6 Mourning Doves Anna Hummingbirds Red-shafted Flickers Tree Swallows Mountain Chickadee - 1 pair on spit. Nest in jeffrey pine snag which had osprey nest on top at height of 25'. Nest hole at 10' on west side away from lakeshore. Snag in open. Young in nest, with adults making several trips with food as we watched. Yellow Warblers - several Audubon Warblers - few Yellow Throats - 2 in marsh-willow area. Pileolated Warblers - few Meadowlark - 1 young caught and banded. Yellow-headed Blackbirds - adults and young common. Tricolor Redwings - 2 males identified for sure. Rest were Nevada Redwings with red and buff shoulder patches. Fox Sparrows Song Sparrows
