June 13, 1954, Sacramento Weir, Yolo Co. Calif. 0600-0730 PDST. Cool, calm, clear. Pied-billed Grebe - called Willow, cottonwood, box elder & open ditch- 1 mile. Blue Herons and Com. Egrets conspicuous by absence - none seen. Black-crowned Night Heron - 1 in willow Mallard - pair Sharp-shinned Hawk - 1 Pheasant - several M's Calif. Quail - calling 1-note Coots - 15-20 Killdeer- 4 Mourning Doves- 5 pair - cooing Red-shafted Flickers - 4 Downy Woodpecker- 2 Nuttall's Woodpecker - 2 Ash-throated Flycatcher - 3 pair - one pair mating (?) in air - flying at height of 5 or 6 feet, finally landing awkwardly in willow thicket - top bird nad feathers of nape of lower in bill. Unusual notes given thruout. Black Phoebe - 1 M Wood Pewee- 3 or 4 Tree Swallows - 2-300, some adults and many young perched in tops of 20-foot high willows, and calling noisily. Cliff Swallows - adults and young - 125-150 closely perched on wire lines and dipping into water. W. Crows - 5 Bush Tit - 1 only Marsh Wren - 1 heard Calif. Shrike - 1 Yellow Warbler - 3 or 4 Pileolated Warbler - pair Yellow-throat - 2 M Long-tailed Chat - 1 House Sparrow - 6 Meadowlark - common and young too Yellow-headed Blackbird - 15 Bicolor Redwings Brewer Blackbirds Cowbirds - 5 or 10 - M's and F's not in flocks Bullock's Oriole - 5 pair, several with nearly full-sized young. Noisiest of birds. Blue Grosbeak - 1 M Lazuli Bunting - 1 pair Black-headed Gresbeak - lM House Finches - 8 pair Spotted Towhees Brown Towhees Common Goldfinches- 2 males 39
