Shrike Starlings - at 1:05 p.m. Mildred and I spotted 16 or 17 perched in limbs of two cotton- woods (P. trichocarpa) at White Rock. They now an then made sorties out from their perches for insects, returning to the perch. They scared easily, and lh flew SSW at 100& ft. for distance of at least 2 miles. 3 M's remained for further observaton, and they moved from tree tops to tree tops. Most perched 10-40 feet above ground. We left area, after taking pictures, and returned 15-20 minutes later, to find a total of 22 starlings peached in the same two cottonwoods. These were on a SW- facing grassed slope, with cattle yard and loading shoots downhill. They were readily told perching, by the bob-tail, and at least some had ragged crest-like formation to top of head. We never heard them utter notes, but inflight their pointed wings, short, spread tail, and rapid strong and steady flighty left no doubt as to what they were. W.
