February 16th 1953, Singer Tract, W of U.S. 65, 10 mi. SW of Tallulah, in Madison Parish, Louisiana. 8-11 a.m. CST. Argantes and Evendens. Walked 2 miles and return in looged hardwood bottomlands.(Few patriarchs left) Much brush and palmetto understory, with bayous and marshy ground. Jim Parker, Warden at Tallulah put us on tract of the Ivory-bills, but no luck! Black Vultures - many perched in tall trees along road Turkey Vultures - several seen. Red-shouldered Hawk - nice specimen. Barred Owl STRIX VARIA perched on hardwood at 10' by road. Observed at 40' distance. Was flushed, but back at same perch 3 hours later. Yellow-shafted Flicker Pileated Woodpeckers - heard and saw many of them, much to our dismay, for they made us think of Ivory-bills each time. Red-headed Woopecker MELANERPE ERYTHROCEPHALUS - only 1 seen - a full adulte male. Red-bellied Woodpecker - several seen. Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - 1 seen. Hairy Woodpecker - 2 seen. Downy Woodpecker - 2 seen. Red-cockaded Woodpecker DENDROCORPS BOREALIS - 1 full adult seen by all of us. Blue Jay Carolina Chickadees common Tufted Titmouse - several seen and others heard. White-breasted Nuthatch Brown Creeper - 2 or 3 seen. E. Mockingbird Brown Thrasher TOXOSTOMA RUFUM a bright individual in brush clearing. Robin Wood Thrush HYLOCICHLA MUSTELINA - 1 full adult in underbrush Eastern Bluebird Golden-crowned Kinglets Ruby-crowned Kinglets Shrike Starling - 1 or 2 seen in field near hardwoods. Myrtle Warblers - quite a few present Purple Grackle - in woods and fields. Cardinals in brush of woods and clearings Eastern Towhee - along bayou Slate-colored Juncos in brush and woods White-throated Sparrows in brush.
