Feb. 2, 1953, Grasslands - 2 mi along road E of Gustine and N of Gustine Club. 4,000 waterfowl observed, in about the following percentage: Coots - 65% Pintail - 25% Green-wing Teal - 5% Mallard - 2 1/2 % Shoveller - 2 1/2% Misc. species included 3 W. Swans, Cinnamon Teal, and many dowitchers, killdeer, and 1 Avocet, and some red-backed sandpipers. Feb. 2, 1953, Atascadera Lake, S. Luis Obispo Co. Calif. 5:10 p.m. Western Grebe - 1 Pied-billed Grebe - 2 Pintail - 1 or 2 Shoveller - 2 imm. M & 4 others. Ruddy - 50-60 Coot - 250-275 Redwings. Feb. 3, 1953, Morro Bay - 7:30-10:00 a.m., S. Luis Obispo Co. Calif. Pacific Loons - several seen on water, and flying over bay. Eared Grebe - dozens seen. Horned Grebe - only 2 or 3 seen. Western Grebes - 100's seen. Pied-billed Grebe - few. White Pelicans - total of 68 - 8 in one buch, and 60 in other at sand edge on west side of bay. Brown Pelicans - 8 or 10 seen. Saw one make 4 unsuccessful dives from 30-60 feet into bay waters. Brandt's Cormorant - roosts on ledges and wind "blow-holes" high on west face of Morro Rock. Seen only on ocean side of rock and out on ocean. Double Crested Cormorant - in bay area. Blue Heron - many Common Egrets - many Snowy Egret - few Black Brant - the previous evening, but a rather accurate count by Ralph Imler and I during a 2-hour period revealed a total of about 7,200 brant, as well as 1000's of other waterfowl and waterBirds on the bay. Ducks - unidentified - 6,800 - Flights at 6:15 prev. evening due west to bay and bar. Mallard - dozens Baldpates - 1,050& on marsh grasses above water, and in wet pasture back of bay. Pintails - at least 750 seen. Green-winged Teals - 460& seen along muddy channels in tide flats east of bay, where tide was out at the time. Shovellers - 15& Lesser Scaups - dozens. White-winged Scoters - common Surf Scoters - some. Ruddy Duck Red-breasted Mergansers - several pairs seen - some nearly full males. Vultures - 6 sunning on fence posts. Red-tailed Hawk Sparrow Hawk Coots - 100's around bay, and swimming onto bay waters with brant, and feeding with curlews and godwits. Black-bellied Plovers - several gray-plumage-type ones seen. Killdeer Godwits - 100's Long-billed Curlews - 100's Willet - at least 1,500 in marsh E of bay. O V E R
