February 18, 1952, Farmington Res, Stanislaus Co. Calif. 1540-1550PST. Little water above dam - was flooded recently. Pintail - 10 Coot - 25 February 20, 1952, Bayshore Drive, Alameda Co. Calif. 1015-1030PST. R- LesserScaups - 100's scattered over bay area. Canvasback - few N of bridge approach Ruddy Duck- several dozen seen. Willet - W & L. Sandpipers Western Gulls Herring Gulls Ring-billed Gulls Bonaparte Gulls Forester Tern Feb. 20, 1952, Marshes NW of Vallejo, Salano Co.Calif. 1710-1730 PST Lesser Scaups, Ruddies and few Canvasbacks and Redheads on open water and channels, but Shovellers most abundant - also observed most were males, but saw two males "neck-bobbing" in front of one female. Pintails in large flights coming to flooded grain field just W of Navy base. Willets and Avocets and White-tailed Kites also in area. Feb. 23, 1952, Yosemite Valley, Yosemite N.P.Calif. 4,000' el. 1030-1630PST. Brkm-Cvc. Cool, except in sun. Up to 2½ ft of snow on ground, less on the north side of valley. Two tree squirrels seen. Red-shafted Flickers - several heard and seen. Pileated Woodpecker - 2 seen and heard. California Woodpecker - several in pines. "hite-headed woodpecker - one seen. Stellar Jays common in loose flocks Calif. Creepers Dipper - two observed along snow-banked river, perched on snags or rocks, singing prettily, a full assortment of songs I hadn't heard before. Also watched one fly downstream, light in the water 3 or 4 feet from the bank and swim on the surface to the bank, Brewer Blackbird - 1 in field near old village. February 28, 1952, Yolo Causeway, Yolo Col Calif. 1515-1535PST. Blue Heron Common Egret Mallard - few dozen Pintail - about 700 near hiway Canvasbacks - 150-200 " " Lesser Scaups - 75-100 " " Coot - dozens - 2,500-3,000 eating-out grain field north of forestry offices.
