December 6, 1951, Gray Lodge Refuge and Lower Butte Baán, Butte Co. Calif. 0915-1545PDST. Clear, 45OF, N 15-20. Pied-billed Grebes - few Farallon Cormorant - 3 Blue Heron - 5 Common Egret - dozens Bittern - 1 Whistling Swans - about 150 in one grain field, 35 ina marsh area. Canada Goose - Common and Lesser White-fronted Goose - common at Gray Lodge Lesser Snow Goose - 1,000's at Gray Lodge Ross'sGoose - 3 seen at Gray Lodge Mallards - abundant Green-winged Teal - 150 Pintail - abundant Baldpates common Gadwalls - 17 Shoveller- common Wood Duck - 28 Turkey Vultures - scattered over the basin area. 40 seen. W. Red-tailed Hawk - 2 Red-bellied Hawk - 3 Marsh Hawks common Sparrow Hawk abundant everywhere. Pheasants common, quite a few males, too, even tho season over a couple of weeks ago. Sandhill Cranes - 35-40 circling over refuge at 130 p.m. Coot - 100's Killdeer Wilson Snipe Greater Yellow-legs W AND L Sandpipers Ring-billed Gulls Mourning Doves- individuals and pairs scattered throughout basin. Red-shafted Flickers abundant everywhere. Yellow-shafted Flicker - 1 seen near Afton Nuttall Woodpecker - in willows Calif. Woodpeckers in live-oak areas. Black Phoebe - quite a few Say Phoebe - 2 seen. Horned Larks common Calif. Jays W. Crows very common Plain Titmouse Bush-tits House Wren Bewick Wrens Marsh Wrens Mockingbirds Robins Western Bluebirds Ruby-crowned Kinglets Pipits abundant California Shrikes - few Boreal Shrikes - common singles and pairs. Starlings - 3 near Gray Lodge. Audubon Warblers Western Meadowlarks Bicolor and Tricolor Redwings Brewer Blackbirds House Finches Purple Finches Green-backed Goldfinches Spotted Towhees Brown Towhees Lark Sparrows Savannah Sparrows White-crowned Sparrows Song Sparrows
