DESER CREEK CANYON, SOUTH OF WELLINGTON, LYON CO., NEV. May 30, 1951 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM With Joe Greenley Also visited another small canyon in the Desert Cr. Mtns. Area Habitat: Elevation from about 5,000 ft. to 7,000 ft. Timber mostly Pinus monophyla with some Juniperus. Shrub understory mostly Artemesia. Some Pinus jeffreyi along creek bottoms. Creek bottom vegetation at bottom of canyon Salix and Populus (trico- carpa?). Also a grove of Populus tremuloides. Also visited two meadows. One with Salix berdsks and the other without. Vegetation in meadows mostly Juncus and Carex. Cliffs and steppf rocky canyon walls along Desert Cr. Canyon. Red-tail - Saw one. Sparrow Hawk - Saw one flying about along the canyon walls. Mourning Dove - At lower part of canyon Horned Owl - one Red-shafted Flicker - one in pinon pine. Red-breasted Sapsucker - One seen in aspens grove. Wood Pewee - Saw and heard one in meadow-willow habitat. Violet-Green Swallow - Individuals flying about in canyon. Steller's Jay - Saw several in pinon pine. California Jay - Saw several in lower reaches of canyon in pines, but willow and cottonwood below. Mountain Chickadee - Heard several in pinon pine. House Wren - Saw one in aspen grove. Sewick's Wren - Watched several in willow thicket at lower reaches of canyon. Rock Wren - Heard one Robin - Along creek bottom. Warbling Vireo - Lots in willows. Black-throated Gray Warbler - Saw one in pinon pine and heard others. Bush-tit - Ran across flock in pinon pine. Red-winged Blackbird - in meadow. Brewer's Blackbird - in meadow. Western Tanager - in pinon pine. Black-headed Grosbeak - in willows and cottonwoods and in pinon pine just above creek. Lazuli Bunting - All along lower reaches of the canyon in willows and in pines just above the willows. Green-tailed Towhee - in pinon pine - sagebrush habitat. Saw one and heard others sing. Spotted Towhee - As above. House Finch - Heard one sing in lower reaches of CANYON second canyon visited. Brewer's Sparrow - Saw one and heard others sing at about 7,000 ft. where pine was sparse, but lots of sagebrush. Song Sparrow - Several in willows along meadow at second canyon.
