May 7, 1951, Southside Park, Sacramento, Calif. 1045-1100PDST. Mallard - 6 pairs, 5 males, 1F and 3 and 4 young. Coot - 6 (1 carrying an 8"-long, 3/8" dia. twig across lake). Robins Yellow Warbler Pileolated Warbler English Sparrows Brewer Blackbirds - pair defended nest against me. Cowbird Black-headed Grosbeak House Finches Chipping Sparrows May 8, 1951, Sacramento County, Calif. South of C.S.H. 16, W of Consumnes R., N. of Mokelumne R., and E. of U. S. 99. 0810-1200 PDST. Clear and warm. Total of 63.5 road miles covered. Blue Heron - 1 Common Egret Mallard - 5 Cinnamon Teal - about 7 pairs seen. Redhead - 7M & 3F or imm. Vulture Red-tailed Hawk Sparrow Hawk Valley Quail Pheasant - 2/5 miles near Florin, thinner elsewhere Coots Killdeer Dowitcher - 5 & 45 Mourning Dove - average 1/2 road miles. Red-shafted Flicker California Woodpecker - 3 pairs with new nest holes in one pole near Sheldon Nuttall Woodpecker Western Kingbirds Horned Larks - 10 or 11 pairs/ road mile near Sloughhouse. Barn Swallows Cliff Swallows California Jay Yellow-billed Magpies Western Crows Mockingbirds Western Bluebirds Calif. Shrike Yellow Warbler W. Meadowlark Yellow-headed Blackbirds in marsh near Sheldon - also 4M feeding on gravel in open Bicolor Redwings - eggs and very small young. Tricolored Redwings Brewer Blackbirds - 1 nest with 5 big eggs, another w/ 4 eggs, and one with small yng. Bullock Oriole - pair House Finch Common Goldfinches
