Feb. 22, 1951, Olmitas, Cameron Co. Texas. A brush and tree-lined resaca to the south of the town. 1400-1525CST. Pied-billed Grebes - several Double-crested Cormorants perched on snags with at least 2 species of turtles. 1855 Louisiana Heron - 2 Coots - about 300 seen very common and very well scattered. Caspian Tern - at least 3 of them coursing up and down the water. E. Belted Kingfisher - 2 seen M. A. ALCYON. G. Horned Owl - flushed one, and found many pellets here and there along trail. B. U.VIRGINIANUS Golden-fronted Woodpeckers Ladder-backed Woodpeckers Trail? Flycatcher - slaty on head and back, yellow wash on belly, throat grayish Green Jay - XANTHURA LYNOSA GLANCESCENS - new life lister! - heard them several times, knowing call from description in Peterson. After much searching I did catch a few glimpses of the jay in the dense undergrowth bordering the resacas. Hope to have thorough glances on the Mexican trip. White-necked Ravens flew over. Black-crested Titmice - in brush and woodland W. Mockingbird Robin - quite pale. Ruby-crowned Kinglet - several in underbrush. Solitary Vireo - 2 seen and one sang. Audubon Warblers - very common everywhere Great-tailed Grackle - C. m. mexicanus Auduboni Audubon Oriole - Icterus melanoccephalus - new life lister! And first found this one in a clump of trees and later found it again to show me. Differs from the Scotts in that the black does not extend down around the back. Snowy Egret near Motel Inca Dove White-necked Ravens Audubon Warblers Great-tailed Grackles C. m. mexicanus Texas Sparrow - Arremonops rufivirgatus rufivirgatus - singing from brush and weeds back of the motel at 7 a.m. Brown bell type!!
