Bicolor Redwings Brewer Blackbird July 17, 1950, Mendota Pool, San Joaquin R-Fresno Slough, Fresno Co. 1145-1300PDST Blue Heron American Egret Snowy,Egret Black-crowned Night Herons - 10 Green Herons - 6 Bittern - 1 Mallards - 40 Pintails - F with 6 1/3-grown young (lots of down) Redhead - 8 in female plumage - also 1 [illegible] female with 7 young - 1/2-grown Duddy Duck - few, 2 in full male plumage Vulture Virginia Rail Coots - 9 Florida Gallinule - 1 Killdeer Black-necked Stilt Yellow-billed Cuckoo (Coccyzus americanus occidentalis) - a new life lister - Hear'd a strange call from a willow thicket along Fresno Slough, and stopped to look back, for we had just passed it, and then I spotted a bird flying past us toward that thicket, and I did not recognize it at all. Finally had several other views of it - gray body, chestnut wings, whitish under body. Black on head. Undertail black and white spotted. The birds gave low, guttural scold notes. Before leaving the area we had seen 3 pairs, some fairly close to us as we ate lunch. In willow-cattail slough border strip.
