ANCHO ISLAND, PYRAMID LAKE, NEVADA, INSPECTION TRIP June 26, 1950 1:30pm to 4:30pm Observers: Marshall and Giles & Tom Trelease, state fisheries biologist Schedule: Visited colonies as found by Giles and Nygren on May 15, 1950. Western Grebe - Some in water around the water. White Pelican - At all stages of reproduction. Six pods found, and a 7th having been so far along that no birds were present. On pod was seen on top of the island after we left the island and were out in the boat. Giles estimated 2500 young were present. This does not include the pod at the top of the island. Fish coughed up by the young birds were carp, Lahontan chubs and cui-ci. Possibly 75% were carp. Trelease counted 232 carp averages two inches long from one young pelican. One brown bullhead was found also. Double-crested Cormorant - Several pods at all stages. 1,000 young estimated present. Cormorants were nesting near edge of water on hunks of tuffa. Their nests were high and contains much alkali weed. Most eggs were hatched. Blue Heron - Didn't visit the nests this time but noticed around 10 blue herons near the lowest pelican pod. Canada Goose - About 165 counted in small groups around edge of the island. Many appeared to be young of the year and could not fly. Mallard - About 5 adults off edge of island. American Merganser - 3 males and 2 females seen off island. Turkey Vulture - Several circling around cliffs. California Gull - Estimated 1500 adults at colony. Young birds walking around. Few eggs, as mostly hatched. Made no attempt to count the young. Nests were depressions in ground lined with algae or other vegetable material. Caspian Tern - Small colony containing 25 nests in gull colony. Counted 40 adults. Most nests had eggs and a few had young just out of the egg. Nests were depressions in the ground. Had no vegetable material in them. June 30, 1950, Hogan Res., Calaveras River, Calaveras Co. 2680-1100 map. Reservoir down about 4 feet, new holding killing out many blue gills and completely inundating good stands of willow along levee pool.
