June 24, 1950, Monterey - Pt. Lobos and Malpaso Creek Vicinity, Monterey Co. Calif. 9:30-7 p.m. Pied-billed Grebe Farallon Cormorants - in the evening at 7 p.m. we arrived at Bird Rock along the 17-mile Drive in time to count about 4,000 of them on one side of one of the 3 rocks in the group, and all the while more groups of 2 or 3 to 15 or 20 were arriving fromboth the north and the south, although most of them were coming from the north. We estimated that 10,000 or more used the rocks that evening. The following morning we saw flights heading north along the east edge of Monterey Bay, with directive purpose. Last evening they were flying west along the south side of the bay out to the ocean, and today flying east and north along the south and east side of the bay to the day's feeding grounds. The bird rocks must draw cormorants from a great distance - at least 15 miles, following the bay coastline. Brandt's Cormorants Baird's Cormorants Mallards and young an lake in Monterey Surf Scoters White-winged Scoters Ruddy Duck - many pairs on lake in Monterey - males with blue bills and all. Also quite a few young with the adults. Red-tailed Hawk Sparrow Hawk Valley Quail Coot - coots on Monterey Lakes. Young from downy to 1/2 grown. Green legs. Observed some adults in antagonistic pose with head lowered and wings raised over back. Killdeer Heermann's Gull - 2 Western Gull California Gull Ring-billed Gull Herring Gull Marbled Murrelet - Brachyramphus marmoratus marmoratus - observed one around low rocks just offshore of mouth of Malpaso Creek south of Point Lobos. Mourning Dove Black-chinned Hummingbird Monterey Red-shafted Flicker California Woodpecker Western Flycatcher California Horned Lark Barn Swallow Cliff Swallow S.
