May 17, 1950, Bidwell ParkB Chico, Butte Co. Ca_lif. l:40-l3l5 PDST. Valley Quail - 4 Mourning Doves - 3 Rufous Hummingbird - l Red-shafted Flckers California Woodpeckers - 4-5/acre. Little Flycatchers Purple Martins - 14-15 of them flying around 6ld Calif. Woodp. holes in tops of the highest sycamores and white oaks along the creek. Some of them came in for landings with the wings nearly closed, opening them just before lig lighting. I also saw martins last evening inOrland. California Jay Yellow-billed Magpies Plain Titmouse Slender-billed Nuthatches Warbler Vireos Yellow Warblers - several Brewer Blackbirds very common. Feeding along creek edge, and carrying food up to 200 yard. Saw male twice drop fecal sacs in the creek as it returned from carrying food to the nest, and before alighting on the bank. I did not see female carry fecal sacs to creek. They hit with a re-s dundant splash. Also saw a female carrying 2 fresh dragonfly adults, picked up on vegetation at the edge of the creek, where the dragonflies had not yet even their wings stiffened. Western Tanager - l male seen to bath at edge of creek, and perch on low snag near the creek, in shade of alder. This M hung around the alder for 15-20 min. Sacramento Spatted Towhee Sacramento Brown Towhee - taking insects on the wing. May 17, 1950, Butte Creek at Goodspeed Road, 8 mi.
