May 16, 1950, Stony Gorge Res., Glenn Co. Calif. 1650-1705 PEST. Vultures Red-tailed Hawk Roadrunner - two of them at the south Butt of the dam, getting drink from the reservoir, which is about full. Ran uphill about 150-200 feet when I surprised them. Mourning Doves California Woodpeckers Western Kingbirds - 3/mile Black Phoebe Cliff Swallows California Shrike. May 17, 1950, Black Butte Res. area, N*& S Fks., Stony Creek, Glenn-Tehama Co. 8:30 pm. (May 16) to 8 a.m. (May 17). Blue Heron flew over at twilight, heading up S. Fk. Green Heron - flushed 3 pairs this a.m. Mallard - 6 Wood Duck - 4 Vulture - 7 pairs, mostly perched one pair/cottonwood or sycamore. Observed one bird fully spread-eagled in the morning sunlight, atop a sycamre. Sparrow Hawk Valley Quail - observed 75 along S. Fk., and up north fork road. 18 to damsite. Pheasant - 5 - 3 crowing. Killdeer Mourning Doves - 94 along S. and N. Forks, 20 to dam. total 114 doves. Pacific Horned Owl California Screek Owl - 2 calling about 11 p.m. Red-shafted Flicker - several California Woodpecker - 40-50/square mile. These birds were still very active at 8:30 p.m., flying, calling, perched on posts, and pales, etc., even though nearly dark. Downy Woodpecker - 1 Nuttall Woodpecker - 1 Western Kingbirds - at the 1st faint dawwI heard them giving 3-syllable notes from the surrounding tree tops. This a.m. I found a nest being constructed at 8' on the east side of a blue oak, in the open. 50-40/sq. mile. Black Phoebe- only one, and it was near a watering trough. Tree Swallows California Jays Yellow-billed Magpies - 10-15/sq. mi. Western Crow Plain Titmouse Slender-billed Nuthatches Mockingbird Robin Western Bluebirds Cedar Waxwings - 14 California Shrike Warbling Vireo Western Meadowlark Calif. Bicolor Redwings Bullock Oriole Brewer Black ird Black-headed Grosbeak Brown Towhee Lark Sparrow
