DOERFLER'S POND, LINN CO., OREGON MAIN MARSH 2 1/2 miles southeast of COLORADO LAKE Will hereafter call this marsh area described on February 19 and 20 as Doerfler's pond. Covered only main pond. With class in Game Birds, which I went with to show them the way to this place. Thus with Jay Long and others. February 27, 1950 2:30pm to 4:15pm Weather: Temp 50 but a beautiful day. Clear as could be. Pond a beautiful day. Water Conditions: XXXX much of valley in flood, but level in this pond stays rather constant this time of year. River and sloughs very high. Had to go through water just beyond the bridge at Corallis. Perhaps this high water is partly responsible for all the divers which would have been washed out of their normal habitat. What a day. Can't understand all the divers. Although we saw XXXX lots of ducks, Mr. Doerfler says XXXXX today there was the low- est number of ducks for some time. He was undoubtedly speaking of pins, mallards and baldpates. Canada Goose - 250 Mallard - 200 in the far pond. Baldpate - 100. These came in just before we left. It appeared as though more ducks were coming in as we left. Pintail - 76 in the far pond. Green-winged Teal - 25 in the far pond. Shoveller - At least 2, a male and female. Redhead - First redheads I have ever seen the valley. Jay says he had never seen them in the valley before either. Jay spotted this first one. Later we spotted others and looked at them through Jay's 19.5 power spotting scope. They were in with ring-necks and cans. Still later three of us, in walking around the pond had a flock of redheads and can alight right in front of us at about 100 ft. in the bright sunlight. Saw up to 24 redheads at one time. Perhaps this was the total for the pond. Ring-necked Duck - About 100 of them!! None of them appeared to be scaups although Charlie Traub thought he saw 2 scaups. They also performed beautifully by taking off and landing again often on and whistling in for landings over our heads. Canvasback - About 30 of them. Ruddy Duck - 2 Red-tail Hawk - 2 Goot - 25 Killdeer Red-shafted Flicker Robins W. Meadowlark BrewersBlackbird Song Sparrow
