MCFADDEN'S SWAMP, 2 miles north of MONROE, BENTON CO., OREGON February 24, 1950 11:40am to 11:50am Stopped by but didn't get out of car. Road flooded so didn't even drive past the cabin. Canada Goose - Flock of 200 flying over Muddy Cr. Mallard - Saw about 50. Coots Killdeer - Several along road into swamp. Red-backed Sandpiper - Flock of about 70. Still in winter plumage. Eight stayed seperate from main flock and walked ahead of car in road. Might have been getting grit. The main flock was in a flooded field with rye grass coming up. Was at first con- fused as to the identity of these birds as this is the first time I have ever seen them in winter plumage. Had killdeers with them to compare for size. Robins Red-wings. FERN RIDGE RESERVOIR LANE CO., ORE. Drove clear around and saw only one duck and that I couldn't tell what is was.
