Airline MARSHES 2 1/2 miles SOUTHEAST OF COLORADO LAKE, LINN CO., OREGON February 19, 1950 and February 20, 1950 Area Covered - This area is mostly in section 4 of T.12S, R.4W. Covered east end of this marsh area. Did not cover the [illegible] west branch of it. At the end of this marsh area on the east side is a large lake which almost completely dries up during the summer. This lake is probably a little over 1/2 mile [illegible] long and 1/3 mile wide. The marsh running into this lake is about 100 ft. wide and 3/4 mile long. The large lake or marsh at the end is something I wish I had know about long ago, as it certainly is a duck area. The narrow strip of marsh running into it held fewer ducks, but is also interesting. Description: In addition to above description, the feeder marsh or strip running into the [illegible] main marsh is dominated by reed canary grass. Some Eleocharis is also present. Strips of it are solid canary grass while other parts are open. Along the edge of this strip is cultivated ground planted to what I believe to be rye grass (will find out for sure). Over 2,000 (strip) feet of this rye grass on both sides of the marsh was heavily grazed by ducks and geese back about 25 ft. from the water. The main marsh is dominated by Carex lanuginosa or a like species. Eleocharis [illegible] almost approaches this Carex in abundance. Some Polygonum is also present and a little Ranunculus aquatilis. A few islands of Carex obnupta are present At the south end is about 2 acres of Scirpus acutus or validus. The edges of this marsh are heavily grazed and consist of grasses and weeds of various species. Water depth up to 2 ft. today. Covered the marsh running into the main marsh or lake on February 19 from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Only ducks present along this strip were Mallards - About 300 of them. Most came from thick growths of canary grass. Baldpate - 25 Vallye Quail - coved of about 20. Covered main part of marsh on February 20 from 2:00pm to 4:30. Saw. Canada Goose - 200 Mallard - 350 Baldpate - 150 Pintail - 500. Green-winged Teal - 50 Shoveller - 10 Ring-necked Duck - 20 to 40 Canvas-back - 6 males and 2 females Scaup - Probably some, but couldn't tell for sure that they weren't ring-necks. Red-tail - 1 Ring-necked Pheasant - 2 around farmyard. Coot - 8 Greater Yellow-legs - Saw one February 19 near this pond. Red-shafted Flicker Calif. Jay Ore. Chicksdee Slender-billed Nuthatch Red-wings - Flock of about 150. Ore. Tbwhee Juncos White-crowned Sparrow Golden-crowned Sparrow Song Sparrows
