MCFADDEN'S SWAMP February 2, 50 continued Canada Goose - 700, mostly at south end. Came in from Failing Estate. Snow Goose - 3 with the above. Mallard - 200, in main pond and in pond at south end. Baldpate - 75 both ponds. Pintail - 150, mostly at pond at south end. Shoveller - 1 male. Ring-necked Duck - 1 male [illegible] by bridge. Sacup - 3 females and one male. Bufflehead - 1 female plumage by road Ruddy Duck - 4, one plainly a male. Virginia Rail - Found this one standing under a Rosa next to the horse shed. I approached within 5 feed and took pictures. Then hit the bird over the head with a stick, stunning it so Merl could pick it up. Have put up this bird. Was very, very thin.[illegible] Absolutely no bodyfat. [illegible] In gizzard were a few small fish bones and what might have been [illegible] some skin from a fish. Undoubtedly this bird would not have lasted much longer. Crows - head'd a few. Orel Chickadee Ring-necked Pheasant - one around shed. Coot - 100 Seattle Wren Pipits Red-wings - saw only 2. Ore. Towhee Song Sparrows W. Meadowlark - one on clod of dirt protruding above water along edge of south pond. Water level low. Did not read stick, but water several inches below road. MCFADDEN'S SWAMP February 4, 1950 4:00pm Beginning to thaw. Cloudy. Stopped by. Did not go off road. Canada Goose - about 50 resting on ice along channel through ice in main pond. This is where most of the ducks were concentrated Mallard - about 50 100 Badwall - 4 with mallards. Baldpate - 25 Pintail - 7 5. Canvasback - 7 took off of main pond. Ruddy Duck - 2 Coots
