Failing Estate About 10 miles south of Corvallis, Benton County, Oregon January 28, 1950 2:00pm to 4:30pm Weather - Ground covered with about 10 inches of snow. Temp. 30 degrees. Overcast. Muddy Creek in flood. Road into estate covered by water up to 2 feet deep. Area Covered: Because of the high water had to start walking before we got as far in as Muddy Creek. We crossed the creek on the bridges afoot and then walked down through the sedge marsh and back With Charlie Traub Canada Goose - At least 1500 on the estate. They were at the lower part of the sedge marsh flocked in the water and on a pasture along the east side of the marsh. Certain areas around the marsh contained their tracks in abundance. At these places was a considerable amount of plant matter floating on the water that had been rooted up and grazed upon. Most of this was new green shoots of Polygonum, leaves of a small composite similar to a dandelion, and grass leaves. Cackling Goose - A few, probably around 25 were seen. Many more were probably overlooked. Ducks, Unidentified - 300 at Ká a flooded portion at the upper end of the marsh. They flew up at too great a distance for us to be able to identify them, but we know mallards, baldpates, green-winged teal were among them from the call notes. Mallard - 100. Many more males than females. The females that were present were almost always paired with a male. Pintail - 25 Baldpate - 12 Wood Duck - Heard one but did not see on Muddy Creek. Red-tail Hawk - 1 Sparrow Hawk - 1 Ring-necked Pheasant - Saw around 15 in one small field. Others were around the marsh. They were feeding in small waterways and drainage ditches that were free of snow. At one location where their tracks were present in the snow the rose hips had been fed upon. Killdeer - heard one several times. Red-shafted Flicker - saw 2 Gairdner Woodpecker - heard one or two along Muddy Cr. in the ash. Crows Short-eared Owl - Watched one individual which following down road with us by flying from fence post to fence post. Ore. Chickadees Seattle Wren - singing Robin - small flock, maybe 15. Varied Thrush - Seemed thick in ash along Muddy Creek. Saw perhaps 15, but heard others. Western Bluebird - Flick of about 15 on ground in wet marsh area. Golden-crowned Kinglet - heard one along Muddy cr. Pipit - small flock where snow was melted along marsh. Brewer's Blackbird - flock of about 8 along marsh. Western Meadowlark - one where snow was melted along marsh. Ore Towhees Juncos, Song Sparrows.
