McFADDEN'S SWAMP, AT BRUCE, BENTON COUNTY, OREGON January 21, 1950. 3:30 to 5:00pm With Charles Traub Weather - Cloudy. Temp. about 40. Light rain periodically. Snow covered about 1/2 of ground. Ice around edges of swamp breaking up and melting fast. Water Conditions - Water so high that we did not try to drive all the way to the Muddy Creek bridge. Yark stick read about 24 inches. Water too deep to wade to island on south side. Meadow at north end flooded at about 2 feet. Area Covered - First went across Muddy Creek and found most of ducks and geese along boundary of McFadden's property and Reader Place. Thus most of the waterfowl were not on the swamp proper at all, but on the otherside of the creek in flooded fields. Then went to swamp north of road. Went up to meadow, but no ducks there. Covered south side only from what could be seen from road. Divers were the only ducks north of the road in the main pond of swamp. Canada Goose - Only about 50 in fields east of the Swamp, but 750 in fields on west side of Muddy Creek. Mallard - About 100 in area, mostly on the west side of the creek. Baldpate - At least one flock in area. Traub counted 61 in this flock, when they landed very close to us on the ground on the west side of the creek. Of the 61, he says 37 were males. Pintail - About 50 in area. Green-winted Teal - 40 in area. Ring-necked Duck - one and maybe more on main pond of swamp. Canvasback - 2 males on main pond of swamp. Scaup - About six on main pond. Ruddy Duck - 7 total, all south of road. Two were [illegible] in male plu- mage. Bobwhite - Covey with 7 near [illegible] lst farmhouse on right south of store. Thus not really at swamp. Coot - Saw about 100 in main part of swamp. Not complete for coot because we didn't go to south end. Killdeer - Heard one calling. Mourning Dove - saw one. Red-shafted Flicker Tule Wren Pipit - one Red-wings House Finch - 2 Crossbill - Heard a flock. Ore. Towhee Junco Song Sparrows January 22, 1950 4 p.m. Corvallis, Benton Co. Oregon. by David B. Marshall Area covered - field of harvested rye on east side of river at bridge. Near Rowing Club buildings. This field partly flooded as the result of the Willamette R. being in flood. Albany road closed at this point. Mallard - of a total of 1,000 estimated ducks, mallards made up about 90%. Baldpate - 50 Pintail - 50 Coot - 2 Ring-necked Pheasant Gulls - 2 adults and one juvenile - all unidentified.
