MCFADDEN'S SWAMP, 3 miles North of Monroe, BENTON CO., OREGON January 14, 1950 3:00pm to 4:30pm Weather: Temp. 25 to 30 degrees. High clouds. Still. Ground covered with 8 inches of powder snow. Edges of water areas with [illegible] up to 1/2 inches of ice. Water was over road between shack and first bridge as well as towards Muddy Cr. The stick was covered with ice, but probably read about 20 inches. Area Covered - North side as far as main pond. Didn't look into the meadow, but it was probably frozen over. Covered all of south side. Canada Goose - Heard some in the distance, but didn' see any. Mallard - About 200, mostly on the south side. Baldpate - About 50, several of which were on the [illegible] north side. The rest on the south side. Pintail - 25 Green-winged Teal - 25 Ring-necked Duck - one male in deep part of main pond with Scaup - 4 males and one female in deep part of main pond diving with coots. Ring-necked Pheasant - Didn't seen any around the swamp, but lots going out and coming in. They were active and showed up plainly against the white background of snow. Saw one cock fly across the road which has some snow or ice sticking the the end of its tail. Coot - About 120. Almost all of these birds were on the south side. Killdeer - One flying around the south end. Horned Owl - Heard two hooting from the ash along Muddy Cr. south of the road. One hooted at a lower pitch than the other. Short-eared Owl - Flushed one from along edge of swamp just north of the road. Bushtit - Flock in Spirea and ash thicket swamp. Seattle - Wren - 2 Ruby-crowned Kinglet - Heard one scolding from ash thicket. Pipit - Must has been at least 40 here and there. They would feed from edge of ice next to water. Red-wing - A few came in just before we left, about 50. Goldfinch - one flew over. Ore. Junco - Must have been about 30. Not flocked up much. Would often see singles. Savannah Sparrow - saw one along dike road. Song Sparrow - Out everywhere searching for food. Saw about 25. Passerine birds as a whole were extremely active. January 15, 1950 12:30pm Weather: Snowing. Temp. 33. One ft. of snow on ground. Water down about six inchesX from afternoon before. Stopped on bridge only. Saw nothing but Ruddy Duck - one pair. Checked Long Tom River where concentration was last year. No ducks there. At 2300 Western Corvallis, Same Day. Savannah sparrow feeding with Juncoes, Golden-crown & white-crown Sparrows on bread crumbs.
