Red-tailed Hawk - soaring over area, and perched in tops of digger pine Sparrow Hawks most often seen on tops of telephone poles and on wire lines. Red-shafted Flicker - in live oak-pine areas, semi-open. California Woodpecker - only a couple in digger pine area. Black Phoebe along the river Say's Phoebe - in open grassland area, perched on fence post. California Jays - a few in live oak and brush areas Pallid Wren-tit - singing in brush near the river. Ruby-crowned Kinglet working the alders along Alder Creek. Green-backed Goldfinches working the alders, too. Lark Sparrows on fences and working a "greening" pasture area. Modesto Song Sparrow - one in creek bottom brush. Jan. 2, 1950, Folsom Reservoir Area, Sacto, and Placer Co; Calif. 30 Brkn., breeze and cold. 1310-1500 PST Canada Goose - about 100 flew over Mallards - 7 flew over the dam site American Mergansers - 6 in one flock on the main river at the dam site, and 2 full males upstream about 1/8 of a mile. Valley Quail - one covey along north side ditch. Killdeer ? sp. Gulls - 3 on river just above dam site. Kingfisher - one along steep creek entering Amer. R. just above dam site. Red-shafted Flicker - several in oak-pine woodland and open area. California Woodpecker - just a couple. Nuttall Woodpecker - one in digger pine, flushed from live-oak clump. Black Phoebe - along the water courses in the area. calling. Plain Titmouse - small flocks working the live oak. Western Bluebirds - small flocks flying over and calling. Ruby-crowned Kinglets working the live oak, and creek brush. Audubon Warblers in blue and white oaks, now defoliated. Green-backed Goldfinches in many areas Sacto. Spotted Towhee - a few in brush Calif. Brown Towhee - in small flocks on open ground, near brush & in it. Juncos - small flocks in the woodlands. Gambel White-crowned Sparrows in small flocks Golden-crowned Sparrows in brush thickets and fence rows along the road. Jan. 3, 1950, Woodland, Yolo Co.-Maxwell, Colusa Co. Calif. 845-930 a.m. Clear and very cold. Windy, from north. Blue Heron American Egret White-tailed Kite - Red-tailed Hawks - several Marsh Hawk F or imm. hovering like a kite Sparrow Hawk - Observed a sparrow hawk make a pass at a recently-killed horned lark in the middle of the highway just as we approached making the hawk veer off, and loop back over the hiway, and after we passed it looped back around, and scooped up the horned lark and flew off with it - the hawk was first observed at least 150' away from the bird on the hiway, and there was no lost motion in moving directly for the bird, and in making the 1st pass, and second catch.
