AREA NORTH OF PORTLAND, MULTNOMAH CO., OREGON LEADBETTER PROPERTY, BYBEE LAKE, SMITH LAKE, RAMSEY LAKE AREA, CITY GARBAGE DUMP, WILLAMETTE RIVER January 1, 1950. 8:30am to 4:30pm With Albert Marshall Trip for Annual Christmas Bird Census of Oregon Audubon Societyy Stayed on Leadbetter property until about 11:00am. Went to Bybee Lake and through bottoms there. Hunting season on so got only poor look at Smith Lake from north shore, east shore and from dump. Ate lunch on bank of Willamette next to Hancock oil co., Went to garbage dump about 1:00pm and stayed until about 2:30. Then went to Ramsey Lake and area around lake. Weather - temp hung around 32. Snowing much of day. Started in morning. XXXXK 1 or 2 inches fell and stuck to ground. Farallon Cormorant - 5 noted along Willamette flying up or down. Blue Heron - 8 mostly along Columbia on Leadbetter property. Mallard - Couldn't make a good count because couldn't go on Smith's property to identify the ducks on Smith Lake. Estimated 500 Pintail - Estimated 600 Green-winged Teal - Estimated 600 Shoveller - 25 at east end of lake. Wood Duck - flushed two from slough in back of Garbage dump. Lesser Scaup - 3 and probably many more on Smith Lake. Saw a flock of about 200 divers there but couldn't get close enought ot identify them. American Merganser - saw two on Columbia at Leadbetter property. One on Willamette. All females. Red-tail - one on Leadbetter property. Sharp-shinned Hawk - swa one at Ramsey Lake. Cooper's Hawk - Albert saw one near Bybee Lake. Sparrow Hawk - one between dump and Ramsey Laek. Ring-necked Pheasant - 2 at Ramsey Lsek. Coot - 120 ah northeast corner of Smith Lake. Killdeer - about 13 for day. At Smith Lake and Bybee Lake. Wilson's Snipe - 1 at RAMSKYXXXXX JUST in the marshes south of Ramsey Lake. Glaucous-winged Gill - Estimated a little over 5,000 gulls in area. 5,000 of these were at dump, where they come into feed in the middle of day from surrounding areas. About 75% of the gulls at the dump were of this species. Estimated there were 4400 glaucous-winged gulls in area. Herring Gull - Estimated there were 1500 of this species in area. 1300 at dump. Ring-billed Gull - 20 at dump. Short-billed Gull - About 60, mosly in sloughs. Flicker - About 10 seen. Harry Woodpecker - 2 on Leadbetter property. Gairdner Woodpecker - 3 seen on " " Crow - 150, mostly around dump. Oregon Chickadee - 85 for day. Bush-tit - Flock of about 20 working in brush under cottonwoods at Leadbetter property. Slender-billed Nuthatch - 8 for day, mostly on Leadbetter proerty. Creeper - one in bawk of dump. Seattle Wren - 4. Robin - 6 around incinerator. BaldPate 300
