Decmeber 30, 1949, Hogan Res. Calaveras River, Calaveras Co. Calif. 1130-1300 Clear, calm, and cold. Water level about as before. Flow below the dam is about 25 sec-ft., and at Jenny Lind - 65s-f. Pied-billed Grebe - 2 Bear Cr. - 1 sec-ft. Farallon Cormorant - 25 - 1 disgorged a 4 1/2" yellow perch (Perca flavescer as it flew over us. They perched on the snags in the reservoir. Blue Heron - 2 American Egret - 3 Common Canada Goose - dark breasted - 500 450 Common Canada Goose - light breasted - 1200 Cackling Canada Goose - 350 Mallards - 5500 Gadwall - 10 Baldpate - 5000 Pintail - 6000 Green-winged teal - 1500 Cinnamon Teal - 6 Shoveller - 400 Wood Duck - 50 Redhead - 75-100 Bufflehead - 20 American Merganser - adults and F/A imm. 250-300 Hooded Merganser - 15 Swainson Hawk Golden Eagle- 1 immature perched in cottonwood snag near E arm of reservoir - had light patches on cheeks. Within 200 yards of it I found where a white-breasted CanadaGoose had been taken, with some wing and many gobs of breast feathers scattered around. Sparrow Hawk Coot - 200 Red-shafted Flicker - 10-12 Lewis Woodpecker - 1 California Woodpecker - took pics of white and blue acorn (main blue) storage in white oak and fence posts. The acorns were stored tips in and butts out. Black Phoebe - 1 California Jay Black-billed Magpie - 2 Calif. Plain Titmouse Slender-billed Nuthatch Pallid Wren Tits singing San Joaquin Bewick Wren Suisun Long-billed Marsh Wren Western Bluebirds Ruby-crowned Kinglets working brush along creek below the dam. W. Meadowlarks Calif. Bicolor Redwings 15-20 Brewer Blackbirds - 150-200 Sacto. Brown Towhees Western Lark Sparrows - small flocks of 15-20 Oregon Juncos - flocks in blue oak woodlands. [illegible]
