OREGON COAST - TOLEDO TO NEWPORT TO YACHATS December 18, 1949 With McAllisters TOLEDO Scaups - six in one pond and 21 in another Ring-necked Duck - 18 Bufflehead - 2 YAQUINA BAY & SOUTH OF Red-throated Loon - several. Patch on nape and up-turned bill showed Western Grebe - 3 seen Farallon Cormorant - Saw about 20* Baldpate - Flock of about 15 White-winged Scoter - About 15 around the WXXXX wharfs. Saw Scoter - Flock of about 20. Red-breasted Merganser - Tom saw one. Canvasback - saw three beautiful males. Coot - A out 15 around the XXXX wharfs. Surf-bird - With turnstones and aleutian sandpiper between Newport and Waldport. About 60 birds in the flock. Black Turnstone - see above. Never saw such a large flock of these birds. They allowed very close approach. Also saw about 10 turnstones working over logs off the wharfs at Newport. Aleutian Sandpiper - About two with the flock of turnstones and surf-birds between Newport and Waldport. Got good views of them. Glaucous-winged Gull - noticed one at Newport. Western Gull - lots at Newport. Short-billed Gull - small flock at Newport. Wren-tit - singing several miles south of Newport. Saw a couple of them too. ***Trip from old road which turns off Corvallis-Newport highway along bay for several miles to Newport. Hardly got out of car. Thus numbers only for small portion of bay. YACHATS AND WALDPORT AREA Lesser or Red-throated Loon - Alsea Bay next to hhighway. Western Grebe - IK XXXX Near Yachats, one. Farallon Cormorant - off rocks in ocean. Bittern - flushed one from a sedge marsh several miles south of Newport. Should have put this bird in above list. American Scoter - one near Yachats on ocean near shore.
