FAILING ESTATE, NEAR BRUCE, BENTON COUNTY, OREGON December 3, 1949 1:30 pm to 4:30pm With T.H. McAllister Weather calm and cold. Cloudy. Took walk through sedge marshes east of Campbell's residences and then over th the Cattail Marsh. Canada Goose - Estimated 3,000 in all. They kept coming in and landing in a field directly north of Pigeon Butte. Were eating [illegible] shoots of rye grass. Probably not more than 10 cacklers seen although many more were undoubtedly present. Lesser Snow Goose - One with the above flock. An adult. Sparrow Hawk - 2 on wires as we went in. Ring-necked Pheasant - only one. Killdeer - 200 [illegible] in [illegible] fallow field along entrance road. Never saw so many killdeer at one time. Saw flock of 100 in rye-grass field near the geese flock later. Western Sandpiper - 30 with the first flock of killdeers. Mourning Dove - one Western Bluebirds - Flock of 20 at Campbell's residences. Pipits - a few individuals flew over Purple Finch - small flocks, several Oregon Chickadee - small flock Robin - A few feeding on some exotic berries. Oregon Juncos Golden-crowned Sparrow - around the Cam bell place Song Sparrows No ducks in the cattail marsh MCFADDEN'S SWAMP, NEAR BRUCE, BENTON CO., OREGON December 16, 1949 3:30 to 4:30pm With McAllisters. They covered south end while I went over north end. Practically all ducks at north end. Weather - Overcast with some light rain. Blue Heron - 2 Canada Goose - only 1 Mallard - About 1,200 in main pond. Mostly males. Pintail - around 200 in main pond. Green-winged Teal - 100 in main pond. Baldpate - Counted 40 in field next to main pond. They flushed into the main pond. From calls in main pond might have been more baldpates than the 40. Buteo - one in ash tree. Coot - 50 Wilson Snipe - 1 Gull - one immature resting in main pond. Couldn't tell species. Red-wings - Must have been 300 or 400. Oregon Junco - 1 Song Sparrows - 10 Marsh Wren - 1
